Cold Weather Hacks That Will Help You Navigate The Roads This Winter

Friday was October 1, which means the temperature is quickly dropping. As the weather becomes cooler, it’s important to understand how to navigate the icy roads. Find out how you can prepare your vehicle for these conditions, all thanks to some household items.
When You See Fog
Foggy and frosty windshields are inevitable during the winter. You have probably tried everything, from defrost settings to your kitchen scraper, but nothing seems to work. If you have a chalkboard eraser sitting around, it will work like a charm.
Whenever you are in a rush and headed to work or school, reach in your glove box for this nifty tool, swipe, swipe, and you will be on your way! To be even more proactive, you can fog-proof your windshield with the following techniques:
- Apply shaving cream on the inside of your windshield, then wipe it off. A thin layer will be left behind, preventing fog in the future. Sometimes you have to work smarter, not harder.
- Do you have any kitty litter around the house? Fill some in a sock and leave it in your car overnight. It will absorb the moisture. Genius, right?
When Your Windshield is Covered in Ice
It’s never safe to drive with ice on your windshield, and sometimes you don’t always have a scraper sitting around. Head into your kitchen and grab a plastic spatula, or rummage through your wallet for a card you don’t care about, like an old gift card (just in case it breaks).
When Your Handles Are Frozen
Can’t get the door open? Light a match or grab a lighter. Very gently, apply it to the area and watch the ice melt. If you want to stay away from the flames, use hand sanitizer. The alcohol will melt the ice in no time!
When Your Headlights Are Dull
Are your headlight covers dull from the snow and ice buildup? Apply a layer of toothpaste, then wait a few minutes before washing it off. They will look as good as new!
