The 2024 model of the GMC Canyon pushes the limits of what a mid-size pickup truck can offer. With a 310-horsepower engine, the little brother to the GMC Sierra can tow up to 7,700 pounds and has an equally impressive payload capacity. Like the Sierra, it has a spacious cab with many of the amenities one expects from GMC’s line of SUVs and enough tech in the cockpit to rival an electronics store. For the 2024 model year, the Canyon adds a new off-road-ready trim, the AT4X AEV. If you’re looking for a mid-size truck that can thread the needle between a powerfully useful machine and a luxe experience, the 2024 Canyon is what you’re looking for.
The interior of the 2024 Canyon is exclusively sold with a Crew Cab, Short Box combination with two spacious rows of seating. The front row has 45.2 inches of legroom, and while the rear seat is smaller, it’s still large enough to seat up to three adults. The interior is lined in soft-touch materials, even in the base trim, with a solid fit and finish. The high-end Denali trim level sports perforated leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. Available are power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Parents will appreciate the two complete sets of LATCH connectors on the rear outboard seats and the tether anchor in the center seat.
The Canyon has a total of 41.9 cubic feet of bed space and a 5-foot-2-inch truck bed with a remote-locking tailgate. Additional bed options include an in-bed power and a tailgate storage compartment. In the cab, there are several useful cubbies and side or seat pockets for additional storage.
The new AT4X AEV trim upgrades the 2024 Canyon’s exterior. The standard model features a solidly durable design with a large grill and muscular side panels. The AEV trim tacks on 17-inch AEV wheels wrapped in a set of large 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler MT tires, a steel bumper with AEV badging, and stronger skid plates. Even the base model of the Canyon has a ground clearance that is sufficient for taking on the trails, but the AT4X model adds rock rails and 1.5 additional inches for a total of 12.2 inches of ground clearance.
As stated above, the Canyon is sporting a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that cranks out 310 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The powerful engine is married to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the base model is rear-wheel drive, while all other models are standard four-wheel drive. The suspension system is balanced, and critics report that the steering wheel is well-weighted. The AT4 trim adds a two-speed transfer case that gives drivers the right amount of torque in every situation.
The off-road models have front and rear differentials with Multimatic DSV suspension dampers, beadlock capable wheels, and extra wide fenders. The mid-size truck’s max towing capacity depends on which trim you opt for. The Denali, AT4, and Elevation trims can tow up to 7,700 pounds, while the AT4X has a slightly lower towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. The max payload capacity ranges from 1,000 pounds to 1,650 pounds, depending on trim and packages.
The 2024 Canyon has a large 11.3-inch driver-focused touchscreen infotainment system above the center console. Over the steering wheel is a second digital 11.0-inch Driver Information Center. The infotainment system has easy-to-use menus and convenient redundant buttons located beneath as well as on the steering wheel for quickly accessing volume and temperature controls.
